If Not You, Who?

I am so busy these days.  September has been full of back to school, after school activity sign up, trying to catch up with friends we haven’t seen over the summer, travel that has meant that my husband and I alternate weeks at home, and worrying about how much water I’m wasting with the long showers that provide me with a small daily dose of peace and quiet.

One of the things sitting in front of me constantly, waiting for me to have enough time to dedicate to it, is a long list and hard think about the future.  What I want and where I want to be headed – in all aspects of my life.  This year has been both kind and less than kind to me, and those around me, in ways that underline the importance of asking for what I want from life, and from myself.

At this point in my life, I like to think I have lived and done a lot and have a lot to do and live still.  Looking at that interminable list of goals, I see that they all have to do with learning and growing, which means welcoming constant change – ouch! – as well as the discomfort and apprehension that go along with stretching myself and reaching for my goals.

I know that one of my goals is to help bring change for women in business – to increase their options, security and satisfaction – because it is crucial for all of us, men and women, that we all have a chance to realize our potential, professionally and economically.   And I know that one way for me to grow in the professional and personal realms and that brings enormous benefits to all women is to form part of a board of directors.  The possibility sounds fascinating, but when I look at my life I wonder how I will ever find the time to a) prepare and find organizations that are the right fit, and b) then to do my job as a board member.

You all are at least as busy as I am though. So I wonder who will take up this important responsibility if we don’t.  And think that if we wait for a less busy moment in our lives it might never appear.  So I hope you will join me in taking a new step towards the quorum we are working on as we prepare to take seats around the boardroom table.
