Combating Competency Discounting

Advisory Board Member Dana Galin Featured on BizWomen

We’re proud that Dana Galin, founder of executive coaching firm Imprint Leadership Partners and a Quorum Initiative Advisory Board member, was featured in a piece for BizWomen titled “Combating Competency Discounting.” Dana believes that women often diminish their accomplishments and skills which prevents them from applying for bigger roles. The only way to avoid this is by changing your mindset.

Dana’s advice:

  • Remember who you are and what you bring to the role
  • Take stock of your superpowers, both hard skills and soft skills such as emotional intelligence, an area in which many women excel
  • Ask someone who knows you well to identify your unique strengths and accomplishments. Share them as facts and connect them to create impact

Values: A Foundation for Leadership

On June 20th, Lisa Quinn, founder, Lisa Quinn Coaching spoke as part of the Quorum Speaker Series about “Values: A Foundation for Leadership” in a discussion moderated by Quorum Advisory Board member Anne Groves.

Key takeaways from the session include:

  • Being clued into your personal values and what makes you tick will empower you to make intentional life and career choices
  • Doing regular check-ins with yourself to see how well you are aligning your personal values to both work and personal life should be a regular practice
  • Lisa cautioned us about values such as empathy – a great value but one that can prevent women from getting things done and moving up the ladder – and modesty- many women think their work will speak for itself and that isn’t necessarily true

Speaking While Female

Special guest, author Dana Rubin, spoke with Julie Livingston on July 20th about her new book, Speaking While Female: 75 Extraordinary Speeches By American Women. Danashared insights on great speeches by women – both well-known and unknown – and how women have contributed decisively to American ideals, institutions, and culture by stepping up and delivering powerful speeches, sermons, lectures, and testimony. Despite being denied access to education, excluded from political life and the professions, and forbidden to speak from the pulpit, women have still found ways to come forward and use their public voices. Speaking While Female presents an entirely new lens through which to view our country’s history, and asks the question: Whose voices should define who we are?

HOW to Find Meaning in a Career Pivot

On Thursday, June 15th Somi Kim, a design strategist, shared her personal experiences in “HOW to Find Meaning In A Career Pivot.” Last October, just a day before the HOW Forum, Somi was laid off from Johnson and Johnson in a role she enjoyed for 15 years. Just a few months later, at the HOW Retreat, she led a reflection session, “HOW Did You Arrive Here?” and an intention setting session, “HOW Do You Want to Shape Your Future?”

According to Somi, “Having been with a company for so long and then experiencing the disruptions that we all have between 2020 and 2022, the layoff was a moment when my assumptions about work, my identity and purpose came to the fore. I’ve been fortunate to have been given the gift of time in my severance package to drill down and discover more about myself before rushing ahead.”

Like many Quorum conversations, Somi shared from the heart about her fears around identity and work, adjusting her mindset with regard to change as well as the things she’s discovered along her journey.
