Annette Green, Fragrance Historian and Futurist

Recognized as one of America’s leading fragrance authorities and futurists, Annette Green served as Executive Director and President of the Fragrance Foundation, a non-profit, educational organization, for 40 years. In 1991 she was elected Secretary of the Board of Directors on which she has served since 1984. Her new memoire, “Spritzing to Success With the Woman Who Brought an Industry to Its Senses,” focuses on the concepts she instituted to help drive the small six-figure industry to its current multi-billion dollar stature… continue reading

Under Ms. Green’s leadership, The Fragrance Foundation served the international industry, retail, media, consumers, students, libraries, and became a central source of educational, historical and cultural information. By way of expanding the industry, Ms. Green organized meetings featuring experts from academic, scientific and fragrance-related communities and published a wide variety of publications that brought fragrance to new business heights. The Fragrance Foundation’s Annual “FiFi” Awards, the Oscars of the fragrance industry, were conceived by Ms. Green 35 years ago and still stand today as the biggest, celebrity-studded awards gala to recognize the best of the industry. In 1992, she brought the “FiFi” Awards to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom to applaud the most unique and successful Men’s and Women’s Fragrance Launches of the previous year.

At the end of the 20th Century, Ms. Green developed and opened the country’s first fragrance museum in NYC, named in her honor by the Board of Directors. At the opening ceremonies for The Annette Green Museum at The Fragrance Foundation, Ms. Green was lauded as “the muse” of the fragrance industry. In 2004, the Museum made a gift of its entire fragrance collection of over 1000 vintage and contemporary bottles and boxes from more than 165 international fragrance houses, perfumers and private collectors beginning in the eighteenth century to The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum & Galleries (FIDM) in Los Angeles. The Annette Green Perfume Museum opened in 2006 at FIDM and led to Ms. Green being presented with the first annual “Legend of Beauty Award.”

During her tenure as Executive Director of The Fragrance Foundation, Ms. Green galvanized the fragrance industry to establish a charitable, tax-exempt organization, The Sense of Smell Institute, dedicated to funding studies on the sense of smell and the psychological benefits of fragrance. Since its creation, the study of the positive effects of fragrance on behavior made a giant leap into the consciousness of the scientific research community. Today, in universities and hospitals around the world, the olfactory system is being studied for both its physiological and psychological effects. Through the science of “Aroma-chology” (a term coined by Ms. Green), great strides have been made in understanding how the sense of smell influences our response to stress, sleep, relaxation, social relationships and performance.

In January of 1994, Ms. Green established The Annette Green/Fragrance Foundation Studio at The Fashion Institute of Technology – the first fragrance laboratory ever to be established in an American University. It is part of a unique program for students in the four-year Bachelor of Science Degree Program with a major in Cosmetic/Fragrance Marketing which Ms. Green helped to establish to give F.I.T. students a career edge as they learn first-hand about essential oils, how fragrances are developed, constructed, evaluated and tested.

Ms. Green was named one of America’s 1,000 “Most Influential Women Today” by Mirabellla in June, 1994.

Ms. Green is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Women’s Project Theater, which is dedicated to expanding the role of women in theatre and served as Chairman for two years. She is a member and past President of Trends and is currently a member of the Women’s Forum, The Fashion Group International, having served twice on its Board and the International Perfume Bottle Association. She was named Cosmetic Executive Woman of the Year in 1982 and remains an honorary member of the organization. She is affiliated with The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Advisory Board in California and serves on the Influencer Advisory Board for a leading New York City-based agency, Sparks & Honey, which employs cutting edge proprietary cultural mapping technologies.
